The British post-punk / post-hardcore quartet releases its debut album on BOMBER MUSIC as a 180-gram vinyl LP in inside-out cover with a 4-page 4c LP booklet.
The band was formed in 2013 in South East London and made their first appearance on the occasion of 'International Women's Day'. Their name refers to the 'Pétroleuses', a group of French revolutionary women who supported the autonomy of the Paris Commune through arson and defied traditional gender roles.
From the beginning, the band saw itself as explicitly feminist, tying into the Riot Grrrl movement as a reaction to a scene environment that did little to encourage or invite women to participate. The response to the quartet was tremendous, and their first two 7' EPs quickly sold out. In May 2016, they began recording their album 'Talk Of Violence' and moved to Graz, Austria, home of their drummer ZOCK, who also plays with ASTPAI.
The ten new songs on the album consistently continue what was already hinted at on their EPs: stormy, rousing post-punk and hardcore, with breaks, interesting rhythm changes and flowing melodic indie rock passages. In the tradition of acts like BIKINI KILL, FUGAZI, TEAM DRESCH, REFUSED, WHITE LUNG, PROPAGANDHI, AT THE DRIVE-IN or WAR ON WOMAN they are not only musically but also ethically and politically in the same line.
Their explosive and upbeat music conveys that they have a message to share even before reading their thoughtful lyrics. The themes of their songs include feminist content as well as alienation, mental health, and the dismantling of societal and governmental utilities.
With 'Talk Of Violence', PETROL GIRLS present a stirring, energetic manifesto that leaves little time to catch one's breath. After the band just successfully supported the European tour of DEAD KENNEDYS, their first album is finally released.
