Origin Pride - Flag

The Rainbow Flag, also known as the LGBTQIA+ - or Pride Flag, established itself as an international symbol of the lesbian and gay movement in the 1970s. The Rainbow Flag was designed by Gilbert Baker, an artist from the USA in 1978 for Gay Freedom Day, which is considered the precursor of Gay Pride.

Meaning Pride Flag

The Pride Flag has always represented the self-awareness, pride and empowerment of groups discriminated against based on their sexuality, gender or identity.
The Rainbow Flag represents the LGBTQIA+ community as a sign of acceptance and tolerance, uniting gay, bisexual, queer, asexual, inetersexual people and transgender people. It is an important sign against homophobia and sexism and solidarity and should not be missing on any Christopher Street Day and Pride Parade. In its original form, the flag consists of six different colors arranged vertically.
The Pride flag depicts the six colors red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple as superimposed stripes. Unlike the Rainbow flag of the peace movement, the reds are arranged at the top and the blues at the bottom. The colors are not chosen randomly, but symbolize the characteristics LGBTQIA+ - community. The color red represents "life", orange represents "healing", yellow represents "sun", green represents "nature", blue represents "harmony" and purple represents "spirituality".

Progress Pride Flag

As an extension of the "classic" rainbow flag, the Progress Pride flag is an important symbol of intersectionality. It complements it with a wedge or triangle in the colors of the trans pride flag and a brown and a black stripe. This specifically gives more visibility to queer people of color and trans people by showing that people can be affected by different mechanisms of oppression in their identity at the same time, e.g. racism as well as homophobia.
