Despite facing multiple forms of discrimination based on racism, classism and sexism, African-American women have developed a rich intellectual tradition. In *Black Feminist Thought*, originally published in 1990 and updated and substantially expanded in 2000, Patricia Hill Collins undertakes the first attempt to explore the words and ideas of Black feminist scholars and writers both within and outside the academic sphere. She develops a theoretical framework for the work of such prominent Black feminist thinkers as Angela Davis, bell hooks, Alice Walker and Audre Lorde. In this groundbreaking work, Collins emphasises that Black feminist thought, as a critical social theory, provides Black women with the tools to resist intersectional oppressions. Through her work, Collins thus aims to link Black scholarship with empowerment and Black feminist activism. The result is a powerful and radical book that provides a well-structured overview of Black feminist thought and its canon.
