The fate of a ‘Jewish club’
Eintracht Frankfurt used to be considered a ‘Jewish club’. Eintracht was therefore more affected by the Nazi takeover than other prominent football clubs. Matthias Thoma, who has already published several articles on the history of Eintracht and is currently helping to set up the club museum, sheds light on this phase in his book. He traces the fates of Jewish members in particular and examines the methods used by those in power under the Nazis to bring a traditionally cosmopolitan club under their control.
Author Matthias Thoma sheds light on the history of Eintracht Frankfurt during the Nazi era in great detail and with a wealth of knowledge. The author spent years trawling through archives, poring over files and interviewing a large number of contemporary witnesses. The result is a linguistically appealing overview in which Thoma successfully endeavours to create a moral picture of the microcosm of the major Frankfurt club during the Nazi era. - Frankfurter Rundschau
