Bernd Heidbreder has been on the run from the German criminal prosecution authorities for 26 years. He is accused of trying to prevent the conversion of an old GDR prison into a deportation centre in Berlin in 1995. The attempt failed and Bernd absconded. After many years of living illegally, he was arrested in 2014 in the tranquil town of Mérida in Venezuela. He was released after two years and extradition to Germany was refused. But the brutal prison conditions have left their mark: Bernd falls ill and dies in 2021.

Unfortunately, the employees of the funeral parlour steal the money that Bernd's relatives had hidden under his tongue so that he can pay the ferryman Charon to take him to the underworld. Now he is stuck in the ‘in-between world’ and wanders along the banks of the River of the Dead. Here Bernd meets all sorts of stranded people who, like him, are unable or unwilling to cross, and strange acquaintances are made.

To pass the time for himself and the others, he tells them his story. How he came into contact with autonomists in Berlin, became involved and radicalised in their circles, fought back against the strengthening Nazis and became part of a large context in which the interests of the individual increasingly blurred with those of the collective. It is an exciting and dangerous life, but Bernd feels safe in it. And he falls in love.
