Every year, countless people are subjected to harassment, repression and attacks by state authorities, who not only consider themselves to be acting in the right, but also very rarely face any consequences for their unlawful actions.

This book examines the multifaceted dimensions of police violence, addresses key definitional issues and is intended as a structured and accessible introduction to the subject.

Particular attention is paid to the analysis of racist and far-right incidents and scandals within the German police force, which regularly spark public debate. In this context, violence by police officers is not portrayed solely as individual misconduct, but is understood as a structural problem within the state institution.

Another key aspect is the examination of reform proposals put forward by civil society organisations, which call, at the very least, for concrete measures to reduce police violence and to promote transparency and accountability.
